Azerbaijan has picked up military officer Jamil Babayev, who was arrested by Armenians on August 26 in Azerbaijani territory temporarily controlled by Russian peacekeepers.

The report was disseminated by local news sources, citing the Azerbaijan State Commission for Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons.

Babayev was returned to Baku thanks to the mediation of Russian peacekeepers. In return for him, two Armenian prisoners were handed over to Yerevan.

On August 26, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry reported that Babayev voluntarily left the psychiatric ward of Ganja hospital and entered the territory, where Russian peacekeepers are temporarily stationed.

On June 12, Azerbaijan handed over 15 Armenian prisoners in exchange for a map detailing the location of 97,000 mines in the ancient city of Agdam.

On July 3, Armenia presented Azerbaijan with maps of some 92,000 anti-tank and anti-personnel mines laid during the occupation in the Fuzuli and Zangilan regions in exchange for 15 ex-detainees of Armenian origin.

The Karabakh peace agreement signed by the Azerbaijani, Russian and Armenian leaders in November 2020, stipulates the exchange of prisoners and corpses of soldiers after the 44-day war.

The first exchange took place on December 14 on the basis of the principle of “all for all” of mutual return of prisoners of war and hostages agreed with Armenia following negotiations with the participation of international organizations and forces. Russian peacekeepers.

A ceasefire agreement brokered by Moscow and signed by Baku and Yerevan on November 10 ended 44 days of fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The Azerbaijani army declared victory against Armenian troops. The signed agreement obliges Armenia to withdraw its troops from the Azerbaijani lands it has occupied since the early 1990s.
