Burna Boy police escorts shoot married man after singer smuggles wife

The Lagos State Police Commissioner’s Special Squad has arrested five police officers attached to singer, Damini Ogulu aka Burna Boy, for attempted murder after shooting dead two entertainment goers – Irebami Lawrence and another identified simply as Tolu – at Club Cubana on Victoria Island, Lagos, on Wednesday.
According to a preliminary report from the Bar Beach Police Division, trouble began when the singer and five police escorts went to the nightclub around 4 a.m. on June 8.
About four police officers waited outside while one of the officers, identified as Inspector Ibrahim, who was in mufti, accompanied the Grammy Award-winning entertainer into the club.
According to multiple witness statements, the singer was in the VIP section with three women when he spotted another woman.
He allegedly told Ibrahim to invite the woman to join him.
However, the lady’s husband is said to have lambasted the singer, insisting it was disrespectful for any man to make advances to his wife.
After a few minutes, Burna Boy reportedly made further advances to the woman.
This further infuriated her husband and his friends who had gathered at the club.
“As things got heated, Ibrahim pulled out his service pistol and fired several times while Burna Boy laughed,” a senior police officer said.
In the aftermath, Lawrence, 27, was shot in the thigh while his friend, Tolu, was hit in the head by a bullet. This caused a stir in the club.
It was learned that Burna Boy and his crew then went to one of his properties at the Elegushi end of the Lekki-Epe highway before leaving for Lekki Phase 1.
“Aware of what he had done, Burna Boy took the next flight without even telling the police. He only made them a video call to inform them that he had been to Spain. All of his police escorts have been arrested and are currently at the command headquarters,” said a senior source at the office of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police.
Sources close to the victims said the police were already trying to protect Burna Boy because of his status as the victims treated their injuries at the Lagos State Teaching Hospital in Ikeja.
In a conversation with Sunday spoona brother of the victim, who identified himself only as Jide, said his brother underwent surgery to remove the bullet lodged in his thigh.
Jide added that Irebami, who is based in the United States of America, arrived in Nigeria a week ago for a wedding.
He also chastised the management of Club Cubana for not doing enough to prevent the situation, adding that the club’s management had not even contacted the family since the incident.
Attempts to get a response from Burna Boy manager Mrs Bose Ogulu, who is also his mother, proved abortive as she did not return calls or a text message on Saturday.
Similarly, Chioma Nwachukwu, media consultant for Cubana, did not return calls on Saturday.
But Lagos State Police Command spokesman Benjamin Hundeyin said the investigation was focused on officers.
Hundeyin said the police did not receive any complaints from any victims.
