Demonstrations in Sri Lanka: request from the army commander

Sri Lankan army commander General Shavendra Silva has appealed to the public to help with the passage of road transport during the protests.

In a video message, General Silva said the public is currently engaged in several peaceful protests in various parts of the country.

It was observed that some groups of people obstructed the movement of vehicles, inconveniencing the public.

However, in some cases, the public themselves stepped in and prevented vehicular traffic from being impeded by these certain groups, he pointed out.

Thanking the public who intervened in this way, the army commander called on the population to help more to allow the passage of road transport during public demonstrations.

The Sri Lankan military is dedicated around the clock to the best interests of all Sri Lankans who have given their support and goodwill for the discharge of their duties, appealed to the general public, engaged in demonstrations to assist the unhindered passage of transport movements without blocking roads and causing inconvenience to the public.

In a special message, issued this afternoon (21) by General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defense Staff and Commander of the Army, he recalled how all Sri Lankans overwhelmingly supported the armed forces in stronger of COVID-19 control works and the war on terrorism by holding blessing ceremonies, services, etc. The full text of his message is as follows;

“Faced with the current economic constraints, the people of Sri Lanka in various regions are organizing demonstrations and agitations in a peaceful manner. To date, we have not caused any obstacles to these peaceful protests. However, a few elements that have turned up at these locations have been seen in recent days particularly blocking road movements, causing inconvenience to the general public and the transport of fuel and basic necessities to different areas of the country. Isle “.

“The Sri Lankan Army, at the request of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), with the aim of assisting the Police especially for the unhindered passage of transport movements since yesterday (20), has deployed army troops and other forces to help in this regard.In particular, we saw on Wednesday (20), some members of the general public who volunteered and showed up to lift these blockades by themselves- themselves, for which we would like to pay tribute to these volunteers”.

“Let me sincerely call on all smart Sri Lankans to support our forces and the police in the same way that you all cooperated with the armed forces in controlling the latest outbreak of COVID-19 and the war against the virus. terrorism in the past. I urge all Sri Lankans to extend equal support to all armed forces and police at this critical time for the passage of essential goods to the public by removing roadblocks and other impediments,” said General Shavendra Silva.
