DRC: MONUSCO pays tribute to the Nepalese peacekeeper who died in combat in Ituri
MONUSCO and the Ituri Provincial Security Committee paid their last respects to Anil GURUNG, the Nepalese peacekeeper who died on April 5, 2022, in the midst of fighting against Codeco militiamen in the locality of Bali, about thirty km of Djugu-center in the territory with the same name.
The ceremony took place at the MONUSCO military camp in Ndoromo located on the outskirts of the town of Bunia. The ceremony took place in the presence of the following personalities: Force Commander of MONUSCO, General Marcos De Sá Affonso Da Costa; the Military Governor of Ituri Province, General Johnny Nkashama Luboya; the head of the Congolese National Police (PNC) in Ituri, General Seguin Kyo Sengelwa; the acting head of the MONUSCO office in Ituri, Teohna Williams; and the commander of the northern sector of the MONUSCO force, General Md Mushin Alam.
Speaking by videoconference from Kalemie in Tanganyika where she is on an official visit, the head of MONUSCO, Bintou Keita, saluted the memory of the 32-year-old blue helmet, who fell on the battlefield to bring peace back to the DR Congo and Ituri.
For his part, the Provincial Military Governor of Ituri also “hailed the heroism of the fallen soldier who sacrificed his life for peace to reign, in the midst of a large-scale military operation in Ituri,» presenting his condolences to his family members as well as to the UN community in the DRC.
Gen. Johnny N. Luboya had this to say: “it is not a death in vain, but rather a sacrifice for peace to return to Ituri and Congo”.
Finally, the MONUSCO Force Commander said that “words would not be enough to express my gratitude to Private Anil Gurung, a hero who sacrificed his life for peace to return to Ituri and the DRC”.
“With such a heavy price paid, Private Anil GURUNG honored his country, his family and the Nepalese armed forces. Unfortunately, words cannot express our deepest sympathy, our unwavering gratitude and bring our loved ones back to life. The ultimate sacrifice paid by this brave hero will not be in vain and we will never forget our comrade. His example of commitment and military spirit will inspire us to fulfill our duty in the DRC.said General Marcos De Sá Affonso Da Costa.
Soldier Anil Gurung’s comrades-in-arms said they remember him as a dedicated man, proud to hold high the flag of his country and the United Nations.
“He was a professional, courageous, dedicated and hardworking soldier. His death is not only a great loss for the Nepalese army but also for MONUSCO. His sacrifice for the noble cause of peace will be remembered. The precious life we have lost is a continuation of the glorious history of the United Nations, of the great efforts and sacrifices made for humanitysaid Captain Salima Ghale of MONUSCO’s Nepalese contingent in Bunia.
As a reminder, soldier Anil GURUNG succumbed to his injuries on April 5, 2022, after being shot during a special operation by MONUSCO against the armed group Codeco in the locality of Bali, about a hundred km from Bunia , territory of Djugu, in Ituri.
His body was flown to Entebbe in Uganda from Bunia today Thursday, from where he will be flown back to Nepal.
