DVIDS – News – New Commander of the 53rd New York National Guard Troop Command
CAMP SMITH TRAINING SITE, CORTLANDT MANOR, New York – Army National Guard Brig. General Joseph Biehler, a resident of Webster and a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan deployments, has been selected to command the 53rd Troop Command of the New York Army National Guard.
Based at the Camp Smith training site in Peekskill, the 53rd Troop Command is one of the two main general officer commands of the New York Army National Guard. The 53rd Troop Command is authorized to just over 4,000 troops and has units located across New York City.
The 53rd Troop Command is made up of combat support and combat logistics support units such as military police, signals, transport, engineers and logistics units.
Biehler is currently one of two deputy division commanders of the 42nd Infantry Division, the other New York Army National Guard‘s general officer command, based in Troy.
The division headquarters was deployed to Kuwait in 2020 where it served as the headquarters for Operation Spartan Shield, the U.S. military’s element in the Middle East.
Biehler replaces Brig. General Jack James who has led the 53rd Troop Command since September 2019. James and Biehler change positions. James will take over as deputy commander of the 42nd Infantry Division – Maneuver.
The change of command ceremony will take place on October 17 at the Camp Smith training site near Peekskill, where the 53rd Troop Command is located.
New York Adjutant General Maj. Gen. Ray Shields said Biehler was the perfect man to command one of the two main elements of the New York Army Guard.
“Joe Biehler is a Soldier Soldier. He has commanded successfully at all levels and is the right choice to lead the various units of the 53rd Troop Command as they focus on Soldier Strength and Readiness,” he said. Shields said.
Biehler has served in the Army National Guard since May 1987 when he was appointed an infantry officer. He has served as a Rifle Platoon Leader, Mortar Platoon Leader and Support Platoon Leader, Company Senior Officer, and twice as a Rifle Company Commander. He also served in battalion and brigade staff positions.
He was also deployed to Iraq in 2004 as an operations officer with the 2nd Battalion, 108th Infantry, then as the battalion commander while deployed to Afghanistan in 2012.
Biehler also commanded the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, headquartered in Syracuse, but which has elements statewide.
He has been the deputy division commander for maneuver of the 42nd Infantry Division since 2017.
Biehler graduated from Basic Infantry Officer Course, Advanced Infantry Officer Course, Joint Staff Service School, Intermediate Education, Army War College, Airborne School, Air Assault School and Ranger School.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in management and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from St. John Fisher College. He also holds a master’s degree in strategic studies from the Army War College.
Biehler’s awards include Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Medal of Honor, National Defense Service Medal, Medal of Achievement Army, World War on Terrorism Medal, Iraq and Afghanistan Campaign Medals, NATO Medal, Base Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, Ranger Tab and Badge of combat infantryman.
Biehler was born in Rochester, New York and graduated from McQuaid Jesuit High School in 1983.
In civilian life, he works as CFO for L3 Harris Technologies in Rochester.
He and his wife Sonya live in Webster.
