Escorts shoot man, foil attempt to release detainee at Lagos courthouse

Nigerian Corrections Armed Squad staff repelled an attack to free an inmate who has not yet been identified in Lagos state.
PUNCH Metro rounded up the detainee, who was brought to the Lagos State High Court, TBS, for a hearing, was at the court premises when his alleged associates attacked staff to have him released.
Lagos NCS spokesman Rotimi Oladokun said the vigilance of the escorts thwarted their efforts, adding that security reinforcements were immediately deployed in the courthouse to prevent a collapse of public order.
He said all the detainees had been returned to custody, adding that one of the assailants was shot and wounded during the incident.
Oladokun said, “A security breach was averted at the Lagos State High Court at TBS by Nigerian Correctional Service armed squad personnel.
“Persons suspected of being associated with a detainee taken to the Lagos High Court for hearing organized an attack on the escort staff with the aim of forcibly freeing the detainee while he was in the court premises .
“However, the swift response and vigilance of the NCoS judicial escorts thwarted their efforts. During the ensuing melee, one of the attackers was shot dead while attempting to dispossess an officer with his rifle.
