Malawi government welcomes death of DRC peacekeeper as body returns home

The government of Malawi on Saturday received the body of a soldier who was killed on May 10 during the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO).
Malawian peacekeeper Lance Corporal Chitenji Kamanga, 28, was killed during a rebel offensive in Beni, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
His body arrived in Malawi on Saturday afternoon through Kamuzu International Airport and was greeted by the Minister of Homeland Security, Richard Chimwendo, and the Commander of the Malawi Defense Forces (MDF), General Vincent Nundwe. , among others.
The internal security official described the death of the Malawian soldier as a great loss for the Defense Forces of Malawi and Malawi as a whole.
“It shows how much Malawian soldiers can sacrifice their lives for peace not only for Malawians but for residents of other countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo,” said Chimwendo, who represented President Lazarus Chakwera at the ‘event.
Nundwe also described Kamanga’s death as a great loss to the country’s Defense Forces.
“We are very sad to have lost one of our own soldiers, this is the first time that we have lost a female soldier in a peacekeeping mission,” Nundwe said.
