Peter Njiru sworn in as new Kenyan army commander » Capital News
NAKURU, Kenya, July 27 – Peter Njiru was sworn in as the new commander of the Kenyan army in a ceremony attended by President Kenyatta at State House Nakuru.
The swearing-in ceremony for the former aide-de-camp to President Kenyatta was held on Wednesday in the presence of senior Kenya Defense Force (KDF) officers led by Chief of Defense Force Robert Kibochi.
The event was led by Head of Civil Service Joseph Kinyua.
Also present were the Kenyan Air Force Commander, Major General John Omenda, and the Kenyan Navy Commander, Major General Jimson Mutai.
Defense Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa and his Treasury counterpart Ukur Yatani graced the event.
The event also featured the investiture ceremony of recently promoted Brigadier Zipporah Kioko and Brigadier Alice Muringo Mate.
President Kenyatta congratulated the newly promoted senior KDF officers and wished them success in their new roles.
Njiru’s appointment is part of military changes – Kenya Army, Kenya Air Force and Kenya Navy made by the Head of State last week on the advisory board of the Defense Council chaired by Defense Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa.
Njiru replaced Walter Koipaton who retired after serving his four years of service.
Current aide-de-camp to President Kenyatta Timothy Stelu Lekolool has been promoted to brigadier.
Others who have been raised in the Kenyan army include Brigadier Daivid Kimaiyo Chemwaina Tarus who is now a Major General and will serve as the General Officer Commanding Western Command.
The Head of State promoted Brigadier General Juma Shee Mwinyikai to Major General and appointed him General Officer Commanding Eastern Command.
Brigadier Fredrick Leuria – Promoted to Major General and appointed Deputy Chief of Defense Force in charge of Operations, Plans, Doctrine and Training.
Brigadier Mungai Nyaga – Promoted to Major General and appointed Commander of the East African Community Regional Force for the DRC.
President Kenyatta also promoted sixteen officers from the rank of colonel to brigadier.
