The Oromo regional state government said on Monday that the head of the Oromo – Shane Liberation Front of the Southern Command had surrendered to the government.
He is identified as Golecha Degina, and he led the military wing of the Oromo Terrorist Liberation Front (OLF) for about 14 years in the south of the country.
What we knew so far is that the military activity of the OLF was not on Ethiopian soil until Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed took office in 2018.
It was after his government invited all armed opposition groups to the country that the OLF entered Ethiopia from its base in Eritrea.
Golecha Degina, a state media Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation report said, has chosen to fight peacefully.
The new military alliance between the Popular Front for the Liberation of Tigray (TPLF) and the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF-Shane) reportedly contributed to his alleged decision to surrender and fight peacefully.
The Ethiopian Parliament designated the OLF and TPLF as terrorist organizations in April 2021. The OLF massacred innocent civilians in the Wollega and Guji regions of Ethiopia. Thousands of people have been killed and hundreds of thousands of civilians have been displaced.
