The Sudanese army commander signs a decree establishing a provisional Sovereign Council.
KHARTOUM: According to Sudan TV, the General Commander of the Sudanese Armed Forces Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan signed a constitutional proclamation establishing a temporary Sovereign Council headed by himself. Al-Burhan was appointed chairman of the Sovereign Council, and General Mohamed Hamdan Daqlu was appointed vice chairman, according to the order.
General Sham-Eddin Kabashir, General Yair Al-Atta, General Ibrahim Jaber, Malik Agar, Al-Tahir Hajar, Al-Hadi Idris, Raja Nicola, Yousif Jad Kareem, Abul-Gasim Mohamed Ahmed, Abdul-Baqui Abdul-Ghader, and Salma Abdul-Jabbar Musa were among 11 members of the Sovereign Council titled Sources say the decision postponed the appointment of a delegate from Eastern Sudan to the Sovereign Council until related deliberations are completed.
Meanwhile, the Sudanese Professionals Association, one of the popular organizations behind the street protests, has expressed opposition to the appointment of the sovereign council. “It is a law that is unconstitutional. The army commander has no authority to take this measure, and we will reject it peacefully, ”the association said in a statement. Sudan has been in political turmoil since Al-Burhan declared a state of emergency and dissolved the Sovereign Council and cabinet on October 25.
