Veterans Day events include a speech by the General of the National Guard
A lecture by Brig. General Joseph Biehler, “The Role of the Military in Supporting State Crises,” will highlight campus events on Veterans Day, November 11.
Biehler will speak about the role of the military in supporting the government’s response to natural disasters and the pandemic. The conference will take place in auditorium 230 of Anabel Taylor Hall, and will also be broadcast live.
The day’s program will begin at 9:15 a.m. with a concert by Cornell Chimes, followed at 9:30 a.m. by a guided walking tour of Cornell Veterans Memorials.
Debra Howell, President of the Cornell Veterans Colleague Network, will introduce Biehler at 11 am; the Cornell Chimes will chime 21 times at 11:11 am to honor the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Biehler’s lecture will begin around 11:15 a.m.
Originally from Rochester and graduated in 1987 from the Rochester Institute of Technology, Biehler is currently Commanding General of the 53rd Troop Command of the New York Army National Guard.
Previously, he was deputy commander of operations for the 42nd Infantry Division of the US Army National Guard. And as a member of the U.S. Army’s 108th Infantry, 2nd Battalion, he deployed to Iraq in 2004 and Afghanistan in 2012.
In honor of Veterans Day, the McGraw Tower will be lit green throughout the weekend.
